Specialist Costs Lawyers - Trusted advisors to Central and Local Government
Name: Caroline Cousins
Job Title: Costs Lawyer
Background: I worked in legal costs for six years, dealing with Criminal Legal Aid matters before joining A&M Bacon in 2005. I then enrolled on what was then the Association of Law Costs Draftsman’s training course. I passed this in 2008 and was awarded the gold cup after achieving the highest examination marks that year.
From qualifying as an A.A.L.C.D member I then became a Fellow of the Association. I then qualified as a Costs Lawyer in 2010.
I have been with A & M Bacon for 11 years, based principally in the Norwich office. I am the lead client contact for various clients, including government departments and insurance companies.
I am both an authorised and regulated Costs Lawyer.
Area of Speciality: Anything complex! I am generally found nose-deep in the difficult and unusual / large claims (including GLOs) and ATE premium recovery cost advices.
What do you see as the main challenge(s) for Costs Lawyers over the next year?
The new proportionality test has gained some sharp teeth; there are numerous reported cases that have resulted in substantial reductions to the costs claimed. We ensure our clients are accurately advised as to what effect this would have upon costs recoveries.
I expect that there will be yet more case law to come on proportionality, in particular for recoverable post LASPO insurance premiums.
Interests outside of work:
I’m a committee member of a Mini club (which includes writing the monthly newsletter) and member of a female biker group. I also recently purchased a vintage caravan so I can be found on the open roads in my spare time, in one vehicle or another!
